Integrity...
Job 2:3 -
Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason."
Psalm 78:70-72 -
He also chose David His servant,
And took him from the sheepfolds;
From following the ewes that had young He brought him,
To shepherd Jacob His people,
And Israel His inheritance.
So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart,
And guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.
1 Chronicles 29:17 -
I know, my God, that you test the heart and are pleased with integrity.
Leaders of integrity are God's pride and joy. The root word of integrity is integer, which means completeness, wholeness. What does it mean to have integrity as a leader? We can have a look at a leader God chose, a leader called David.
A real, courageous and honorable leader...
1) is not flawless.
He (used loosely here to mean a she too) is not required to be flawless, but he is to be falseless. To be falseless is to be real before God, himself, and others. God is never against real people. He is of truth, and in fact hates deception and falsehood. Therefore we can be real, there is no shame in admitting our weaknesses and strengths. Throughout his Psalms David was very real in expressing his heart.
David's wrongdoings were exposed for everyone to see. Imagine your sin announced to the whole world, and written on paper for thousands of years to come. Not that it would happen to us, but that was how far he had to walk in his journey. Yet he was still a real, courageous and honorable leader that many people take leadership studies on. Because he was falseless, not flawless.
2) is comfortable with his own skin.
He is the same inside and out. When we peel an orange, we expect to see an orange on the inside too. The orange may not be perfect, flawless... and it has the natural basics of integrity in-built by God, but you can be sure that you'll get an orange on the inside and out. Can we find the same person in church? at home? at work? or wherever we are? There should be no shocks when we peel off our outer skin. We should see the same person on the outside as well as the inside.
Asaph mentioned that David had integrity of heart first, then only his skills. What is God trying to say here? Character comes before competency. Capacity of the heart comes before capability of the hands.
Why integrity of heart before skill of hands?
1) Everyone can teach, model, show others skills. But we cannot impart and transfer something to someone that needs character of heart. We cannot impart integrity. Make this your prayer today, "Lord, I may not have skills, but give me the heart... a heart of integrity."
2) You can lose relationships with God and people over integrity issues. But we won't lose relationships over the lack of capability and skills. God treasures relationships. He made us relational beings. We cannot survive without relationships, but we might very well survive without skills.
All over the world, leaders fall very often because their position is gained out of their skill, not their integrity/character. Therefore, desire not to be promoted because of your skill, and not to promote others because of their skill, but to be promoted / promote them because of the integrity of heart.
It's been that way in the past, and it's still the same today. God is still searching for integrity. Do you want to be God's pride and joy?
